Welcome to DISCUSSION!

Hi, everyone! Once a week, I'm going to give you a topic. All players need to do is give their opinions/stories/comments on said topic. There's nothing really formal about this, but you'll get cards for answering regardless. There's no requirement about how big or detailed of an answer you give, but try to avoid one word answers! (This is about talking, after all)

This week's topic is SCARY CANONS.

A question you could answer (but are not limited/required to) is What horror movie/anime/manga/game/whatever would you recommend?

You'll get 2 regular cards and 1 puzzle card for commenting. Prizes will be distributed throughout the week and this game ends on Tuesday, October 21st.

oh my favorite horror movie is "you're next" because it was hilarious and the protagonist suddenly became australian katniss everdeen and by the end, the serial killers were the ones who were scared. IT'S SUCH A GREAT MOVIE. SO FUNNY AND COOL

my favorite horror anime is... probably another. even though i got really annoyed by everyone dying. i got annoyed when one of the kids was ill and they were like "so let's talk about that horror story" /dies. HOW DID NO ONE SEE THAT COMING, YOU IDIOTS??? BUT THE MYSTERY WAS FAIRLY GOOD THOUGH so i forgave it for that. OH SHIT I FORGOT ABOUT THIS ONE ANIME I WATCHED, DENPA TEKI NA KANOJO. it's not the most amazing thing i've ever seen but i actually super enjoyed it. it's sort of higurashi esque in that this guy with a harem is out to investigate murders and the main girl makes you believe she'll be like... yuno gasai 2.0 but she has all the awesome girlfriend powers and none of the crazy. IT'S SUCH A GREAT OVA AND THE WAY THEY REVEAL THE MURDERERS IS STRAIGHT UP OUT OF NOWHERE AND I WAS LIKE SO DUMBSTRUCK BECAUSE YOU HAVE LIKE 15 MINUTES LEFT AND I'M LIKE WHAT? IS IT OVER---HOLY SHIT. so if you want to watch something that will just surprise the shit out of you with some super violent twists, i'd definitely rec it for the same reasons i'd rec another

i generally don't play horror games because like otomes, i get very aggressive and yell "FUCK YOU, GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME" when things try to pursue me. i HATE CHASE SCENES COMBINED WITH JUMP SCARES BECAUSE JUST GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME?? this happens a lot in ib and corpse party and i didn't have the patience to sit through the bad ends bECAUSE I JUST WANT TO GET OUT OF HERE ALIVE STOP. i like games where i can headshot zombies though, those are fun

randomly i just want to mention how impressed at i am myself because i used to be really scared of horror movies and now i don't even care. LMFAO. people in haunted houses jump at me and i'm like "oh" and they jump back LMFAOIFDJSA

I have to agree that Corpse Party was very enjoyable for me, too, and I would definitely recommend it! I'm usually the type of person who takes forever to get into new series and get caught up, but once starting this game I was determined to get through it within a week or two at most. There were so many twists, it was very entertaining to go through and to learn more about the setting and events in the game. I never thought I'd end up so attached to the characters involved, but, damn, Corpse Party has a lot of interesting characters that I love a whole lot. A+++ game, would recommend.

I was hopping for a horror topic, since this is literally my career and living in one sentence. What I recommend for horror? Anything creative. Everyone has a different view on horror series, and to be honest, no one will really be satisfied. This is mainly because what people look for is fear, and fear is really just in the mind of the beholder. Because of this though, people tend to get the idea of horror wrong. They think 'what is scary? blood and skeletons' lets make a game all about that. Where, the idea of pain, and death can frighten anyone, playing a game where a skull is lying around and a lot of blood appears on the screen is meant to draw out that feeling, but tends to not have that effect on people who are not concerned with those issues. Do doctors scare you? Then maybe you will have a horrible feeling playing a hospital level in a video game. Does the idea that things are hopeless upset you? You might like a game with Zombies. The unknown feel weird? A fantasy series with creatures is a good idea. The idea of Horror is Dread and Fear. Its hard to experience that though in media. And as I said, many games and series try to bring this out with imagery, but there is more to horror then just that. Emotion needs to be drawn in as well. That being in mind. Horror can qualify as anything that leaves you with strong emotion and worry of what is to come.

AND THAT'S WHY I LIKE THE WALKING DEAD. CAUSE OH MY FKING GOD. DO I GET OVERLY EMOTIONAL WITH THAT SHT. DID YOU EXPECT ME TO TELL YOU I LIKE SOMETHING VERY DEEP AND SPIRITUAL AND UNHEARD OF? HAHAHAH NO FK THAT I REALLY LIKE THE WALKING DEAD.

Okay lets get back down to reality, I guess one horror series I like is The Walking Dead. To a lot of people, this is not a horror series. 'Oh, its just zombies, nothing scary', but as I said, the feeling of dread and fear indicate what is horror and what is not. To some, this series can indicate it is, indeed in fact, a horror series. Despite how well versed I am with horror and how well i know what the 'common answers' are. Yet, the idea of this happening to me would upset me a lot, I would feel unsafe no matter what plan I have, there is no cure, there is no answers, and the safety of others is as high at risk as it would be for me. This gives me dread. I watch this show, and try to imagine how would this effect me. Its one thing watching a show or movie with something, and then thinking 'I would never go to the haunted house at the edge of the woods on the anniversary of all those killings, especially since the killer has never been caught' type scenario, because just that, there is a way to avoid it. Do not do is your answer. In the Walking Dead? There is no do not do, its just a matter of you to delay what has already happened from happening to you. That and I grow to attached to people and OH IF I THINK YOUR GONNA DIE I GET SCARED. okay off that...

Another series I really like is Silent Hill. Not really scary, as its not supposed to be terrifying for your mind, its supposed to be terrifying for the mind of the person involved. Its very creative, er... well the earlier games at least. The idea that what is happening around you is related to the mind of either you or a person around you is just amazing. Zombies are dead people. That's about it. In Silent Hill? It's not zombies, its your actual fears. Do not like Dogs? WELL HOW ABOUT INSIDE OUT DOG CREATURES THAT CAN KILL YOU! It's not all fear either, some things in Silent Hill can actually be memories or insecurity as well. However, instead of being displayed as 'I don't like cheese burgers' 'oh well then here is a walking cheese burger' it comes out as 'I don't like cheeseburgers' 'here is a cow creature that has jagged movements, an unusual shape and pattern, and is wrapped in lettuce, mayo, and ketchup. It bleeds cheese.' does that not make sense? well good cause sometimes horror just doesn't.

Galerains is another series I really want to recommend, and will probably be the only 'obscure' series I can mention. Because of that, it's best to say the series follows the character Rion, who has pscyhic powers, and must help and protect a girl named Lillia, who calls for his rescue via telekinesis. In all honesty, its a very hard to control video game, and was released only on the Playstation (with an easier to use sequel on the Playstation2.) Because of this, I recommend watching the OVA, which covers the game pretty well. I really love the fact that this game doesn't take things lightly. Its kill or be killed in this universe, and some of the subjects are really interesting to explore. One would be the fact that your character has to openly use drugs to control and use his telekinesis properly, or end up dying in the process. This is even more evident with a drug dealer seen some points in the game. Another part that i just enjoy so much on this game was the final boss fight and the ending as well. I don't want to give anything away, but that this honestly deserves more credit then it has ever been given. The sequel is also good as well, and follows directly after the events of the first game, but if your only interested in something quick, the first game covers things very well.

There are other series I love as well, that are categorized as horror. However, I do not really love them for that aspect. Take Resident Evil/Biohazard as an example. Considered one of the staples of the Horror video game universe, I love it for its characters and at times goofiness. The lore is pretty good, and I do enjoy a lot of the creatures. As I stated, creativity is something I love, and the Resident Evil series uses it in creatures at time. However, it was never it's main focus, and doesn't employ the whole of the game. But, it does stay pretty good and faithful to itself from time to time (despite how people feel on the later games). It can bring out some amazing environments and ideas, and at times, have unsettling results.

without making this 90000 paragraphs long: I like and recommend Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Rule of Rose, DreadOut, Galerians, Parasite Eve as games. Evil Dead (all 4 movies + side media), The Walking Dead (Comics and Show, Game is great, but not so much on the AMC Game), and The Crazies (both 1973 and 2010) as non games/anime. And I never found a good horror anime ever. I like Umineko and Higurai's anime adaptions kind of, as well as the Corpse Party OVA, but anime is a limited form, it restricts what your allowed to see and has to entertain you with images opposed to text.

TL;DR: I am really good with horror, but I can only recommend low level sht.

when they cry is always my favourite.. i didn't think umineko was that scary at all but higurashi really frightened me at some points LMFAO... maybe it's since i read the manga first because in there they draw everything like three thousand times as creepy I STILL AM NOT EVEN THEIR WEIRD EYES IN THAT GOD

THAT PAGE IN WATAGANASHI-HEN OF SHMION ZOMBIE CRAWLING OUT FROM UNDER THE BED WILL FOREVER SCAR ME...

the vn and anime are much less scary than this

I did have fun with Fatal Frame - but in general when it comes to horror I rather like things that have less jump scares and more of a really good sense of dread and fear throughout.

I admit with no shame at all that I am impossible with horror canons. As a kid I devoured scary stories and ghosty shows but now I'm...it's just all too scary. Jump scares, abandoned hospitals, zombies coming to get you, suspense music or quiet peaceful somber music denoting something might be waiting in the shadows, I can't handle any of it.

That said.

For games that touch horror and intermingle with it but do not totally encompass OH MY GOD SHEER TERROR (more of a psychological...subdued thriller, of sorts?) I cannot possibly recommend the Zero Escape series hard enough. I really can't. Talk about the near-perfect intersection of intellect and cleverness and OMG WHAT and creeping sinking-in horror and the intense compulsion to keep moving because you must know the truth. I did not realize at the outset how intense 999 was going to be but once I was in it I was in it and both ZE games are fortunate enough to have a story that feels...like, hm, 97% of the content/puzzles/exploration/wtfery is *not* overt or forced. If you are expecting zombies and death-spiders and chainsaw murderers then this is not that, but if you enjoy (and I found I did enjoy it, even while playing in frozen shock at 2 am) the increasingly volatile sense that something is watching you and judging you and that you can trust absolutely nothing but you must trust everything/everyone or else you die? PLEASE GO FOR IT.

PRoooooobably the closest thing to a "horror" anime I've seen is the Bakeneko movie that is part of...Mononoke? It felt more intense due to shortness and the presence of character movement and voice (which accounts for so much of my fear with any horror thing actually) but in the end I enjoyed this threeshot too.

One year my anime club spent october meetings marathoning the Satoshi Kon movies. They're good. So good. Bring someone to hide behind.

Dear Himitsu, if you could recommend stuff to a terrified, hates-jump-scares-and-torture-and-things-trying-to-kill-me-and-needing-to-outrun-stuff gamer/anime fan...what would you pick?

I'm so outrageously desensitized to horror that it's just not scary anymore. But I mean I grew up watching the classics like Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, Child's Play, Night of the Living Dead, ect -- all the things that are meant to scare the pants off grown adults, and for the time period they were in actually were scary but I just... wasn't scared. Only Chucky ever managed to make me wanna crap myself in fear, and it's because my cousin was evil one summer. She'd convinced me that Chucky was real and that the hair she cut off her strawberry shortcake doll was actually a sign that he was coming for me next. Something to note is that Catherine Hicks (the woman who played the mom in the first movie) actually knows that story. My mom met her at a convention and regaled her with it, who then went back and told her husband, who created the Chucky doll. Fun stuff.

But if anyone ever wanted to feel like good horror vibes were still around in the modern-ish era, then I'd suggest the first season of Supernatural. It's gotten way more campy over the years, but it did a good job at the beginning being creepy.

Beyond that, I just don't do it. I get too bored. So I don't read or watch or even play anything scary because I can see all the twists and turns coming from a mile away. :/ And I'm just not that into jump scares.

i'd recommend wadanohara and the deep blue sea tbh

the first half of the game is something you can through without worrying about horror at all. it's the second half of the game that twists and turns into the horror i was expecting it to be from the start, although there are two parts where you have to run away from some rabbits who, if they catch you, instantly make you game over! the upside to all of this is that it while there are multiple endings you can get and you're only able to get them in order (except for the ending with orca and samekichi, which is the bad ending), they don't make you replay the game to get those endings. they bring you right back to where you have to make the singular choice to get the ending and give you options until you get the true ending!

...i should also warn for maybe one scene of implied sexual assault that might make you cringe (legitimately cringe, i know i did), but nothing comes out of it other than the innate feeling of skeevyness, so. 8|a it didn't turn me off to finishing the game, that's for sure.

but personally, i didn't consider the game to be very scary at all. it definitely fits into the horror genre in the second half, but it was something i could play without having to worry about stopping because i got scared or something. there was a single moment of me being creeped/skeeved out and the imagery in it can get bloody, but o/ if you don't mind that and want to play something that won't try to jumpscare you or isn't heavy on the torture, wadanohara is pretty good! again, you can play the first half of the game without worrying about anything other than chugging along on your little boat in the sea and exploring various areas before everything dips down into "omfg what happened to my cute little sea exploring game wtfwtfwtf" - if you're interested, you can download it from here! ♥

i looooove the horror genre so much. i don't even care if i can predict what's gonna happen, i still get a thrill from watching it happen. i grew up on things like nightmare on elm street, chucky, resident evil, and supernatural monster movies, so! in the recent years, i've been scared by movies like insidious and paranormal activity - which give me the creeps and intense feeling of dread - but the movies i've had nightmares over would have to beeee the grudge/ju-on and that movie with the little murder doll who yelled "AYAYAYAYAYA" and somehow managed to take down an adult even though it was really... really tiny..... idek my child self found it terrifying

also seconding jun, the walking dead is the best and everyone should watch it.

and as much as i say i love the horror genre, you would not be able to get me to sit down and play any horror game by myself (minus l4d, i love l4d). i had to have my sister there with me when i was playing fatal frame ii... such a good game. such a good game series. unf. somehow i managed to play anna by myself well enough, but i'll be the first to admit that the creepiness got to me and i haven't touched it in maybe a year. the soundtrack is beautiful though and it was definitely worth the purchase if only for that. wadanohara is really good too, but i didn't find that scary LMAO it was really, really fun though.

AND I WAS REMINDED OF DREAMING MARY JUST NOW dreaming mary is kinda like wadanohara: you don't expect the horror to be there because it's so cute and pink and fluffy until you meet the boar and want to go deeper into the game, which everyone tells you not to do in-game but you're like "fuck dat i wanna go deeper", and it slowly transforms into this terrible, terrible mindfuck of a horrorfest and it just. breaks your heart story-wise when you realize what's going on, ugh 8(

...i admit that i enjoy watching people play horror games. that's basically how i pass time on youtube: watching markiplier play horror games.

uhhhh manga and anime-wise... i don't find horror anime/manga to be very interesting. i think the last one i watched all the way through was another? idk if mirai nikki counts, but i'll mention that too. and the manga with the little higanbana girl. I DON'T WATCH OR READ MUCH ANIME/MANGA ANYMORE CRIES if only i had all the time in the world orz

--great blue sea, not deep blue sea, where is my brain today. BUT YEAH THE HORROR KINDA... CREEPS UP ON YOU IF YOU'RE NOT EXPECTING IT the cards don't depict the true nature of the game (since they're only sprites), believe me. one moment everything's fine and the next thing you know there are suspicions of something in-game being messed with and then BAM. the game is so cute up until then. so cute, and then the horror blindsides you and you're left feeling so bamboozled and heartbroken by the story, ugh. ;n; my heart

Hm, well the scariest game I've ever played would probably be Clocktower 3. Mostly because I don't like the whole run for your life type of gameplay. It has a fear meter and everything and when shes in panic mode it makes you panic as well LOL.
Uhm, I just finished Shiki and I can honestly say it wasn't "super scary," but it did really give me creeps on some parts. I'd recommend it for sure.

I agree with Jun and the Silent Hill series. That one's pretty scary and would not recommend it for those light hearted players LOL.

I really enjoy horror with a more psychological twist, or horror that mixes with other genres, like drama or comedy. Probably the most recent thing I loved the crap out of horror wise was... Cabin in the Woods, a parody film that makes fun of horror stuff. LMAO. TBH I enjoy reading horror fiction more than I enjoy watching or playing. Stephen King and Lovecraft are two of my favorite authors ever. Though I haven't had any time to catch good books lately. :(

BURSTS THROUGH THE WALL LIKE THE KOOL-AID MAN

DID SOMEONE SAY HORROR CANONS?

i'm admittedly not very into western horror movies and such since they tend to not be my cup of tea but i love horror series!! i like psychological horror more than straight up gore/splatter fest stuff most of the time, or series that are combinations of both!! i'm also a fan of horror that leaves you emotionally dead inside after finishing it; there's nothing quite like feeling hollow and empty after reading the last chapter or beating the game.

some series i would recommend (and most of these are manga) are...

apocalypse no toride/fortress of apocalypse!! its about teenagers in a detention... prison facility when the zombie apocalypse happens! in some ways its a fairly typical zombie outbreak series but that doesn't stop it from being entertaining and having a lot of moments where it gets genuinely upsetting. it also has some incredibly unsettling zombie designs that made me go "uM" in alarm. as you would expect from a zombie manga, it has some gore and disturbing content and isn't for everyone, but if you can handle blood and guts i'd recommend it!!!

tokyo ghoul!!!!!! its gotten pretty popular lately and i'm so glad for that because tokyo ghoul is great! its about a college student named kaneki ken who literally never gets a goddamn break after becoming a ghoul in the aftermath of nearly being murdered. this might not be so bad if ghouls didn't have to eat humans to survive... yeah. tokyo ghoul is full of emotional gut-punches and moments where you think there is literally no way for things to get worse but they do anyway, and it has a wide variety of characters. i'd caution anyone looking to read tokyo ghoul since it has pseudo-cannibalism and other such things, but if you read it pls tell me so we can cry on each other over how much everything in it sucks.

zekkyou gakkyuu! this is a collection of episodic chapters, with almost each featuring a new story (with all of them being horror in one way or another). this manga doesn't have many if any bloody scenes and has a few chapters dedicated to fleshing out the backstory of the series' narrator, a girl named yomi.

gakkou gurashi is another zombie manga, but this one is more focused on the psychological aspects rather than blood and guts! it follows a group of girls who call themselves the "school life club"... as they're trapped in their school by zombies and cannot leave. the main character, yuki, is delusional about their situation and has created an imaginary world where they're still just ordinary students to protect herself from the horrors of their situation, and its incredibly heartbreaking and upsetting to see them all struggle to survive and stay sane. i'd definitely recommend gakkou gurashi if you'd like to steer clear of more outright gorey series!

dreaming mary, aka that game that looks cute and pink and pastel. dreaming mary is really good at atmosphere and lulling you into a false sense of security until you actually start doing things and you start realizing how incredibly fucked up everything in it is. i can't say much without spoiling the plot but when i finished all the endings i was successfully creeped out and unsettled.

...wow i talked a lot didn't i OOPS

I am too much of a weenie for horror things. Like, I should probably be a member of Super Weenie Hut Jrs for my inability to watch or play anything scary. I'm naturally really jumpy but when I KNOW something is scary I get really anxious about things happening which makes me get even MORE scared and jumpy.

HOWEVER I somehow still like the Saw movies even though they give me nightmares and make me feel like I'm going to wake up with my foot chained to my bed and I'll have to eat it off or something. They're very interesting movies and also horrifying.

Cabin in the Woods is an AWESOME horror movie that deconstructs your typical teens-in-the-woods movie tropes and isn't so scary that I couldn't watch it. Bonus: directed by Joss Whedon, starring Thor (aka Chris Hemsworth)

Showgirls.

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

Honestly, I haven't watched a lot of "horror". I mean, I personally don't classify Vampire Hunter D as such. Nor Hellsing. I suppose that's because there is very very little in way of animation or video that actually is capable of scaring me.

To me...I think shows like Monster are far more horrifying than bloodbath shows. Monster is a psychological thriller and I'd recommend it any day, even if it is forever long.

In terms of live actions movies...I love the old campy classics. I don't care if they aren't scary. Give me Vincent Price in Mask of the Red Death or Peter Cushing in The Curse of Frankenstein.

i'm not particularly into horror/scary stuff, so i honestly can't say LMFAO. my friends dragged me to watch the conjuring last year, and from what i see most horror people seem to agree that it was a pretty good horror movie?? IDK. i like reading up on movies like saw and other horror movies for some reason, but i never watch them.

as for animanga and vidya uhhh... i've actually never played a horror video game, but i'm also pretty sure that i'm bad at jump scares LMAO i don't think i'd do well. i kind of want to play one some time just to see how much i'd scream, but that's neither here nor there. i remember i thought higurashi was pretty scary when i watched it, but i was also like. 12-years-old or something, i don't think DAT DEEN ANIMATION could scare me now. i wanna say kara no kyoukai is kind of scary in the suspense/thriller kind of way, but i didn't personally find it scary, just intense.

man idk i'm not good at this stuff haha.
