Welcome to DISCUSSION!

Hi, everyone! Once a week, I'm going to give you a topic. All players need to do is give their opinions/stories/comments on said topic. There's nothing really formal about this, but you'll get cards for answering regardless. There's no requirement about how big or detailed of an answer you give, but try to avoid one word answers! (This is about talking, after all)

This week's topic is ARTISTS.

A question you could answer (but are not limited/required to) is Who is your favourite mangaka?

You'll get 2 regular cards and 1 puzzle card for commenting. Prizes will be distributed throughout the week and this game ends on Tuesday, November 18th.

ARINA TANEMURA... i haven't read all of her works but i fell in love with full moon wo sagashite when i was about twelve years old and it's a series that has a lot of emotional value to me and makes me very sentimental... i need to catch up with her newest stuff but i love love love how she draws hair and i like the big, gorgeous eyes she draws, too, and the clothes she draws for her characters. everyone is always beautiful

basically i love everything about arina tanemura's art style

\(>.<)/ This is hard, but I guess it would have to be Amano Akira. I just really like her style of drawing, especially for KHR. And probably especially the hair and the eyes are great too. \(*o*)/

i don't think i have a favourite per se?! although i have a fondness for some of the mangaka that did the umineko and higurashi manga.. and then i don't mean the weird faces in ep1 and ep2 okay more the one who did ep3 (i think they did like half of both manga man) and especially the one who did ep4, their style is so cute...

LMFAO.... the only artists i only care about are the ones that draw porn. i'm gross, I KNOW but they're names have been ingrained into my memory. my favorites are izayoi seishin, oda non, nishieda, a bunch of others and then... yaoi wise it's ike reibun, yoneda kou and nekota yonezou.

would i start collecting illustrator decks if they were donated??? yes......... yes i shamefully would

though some honorable mentions to normal mangaka whose styles i like are akira hiramoto, murata yuusuke, fujiwara hiro, yusuke kozaki... (other than hiro-sensei i had to google their names so don't think i know more than i do)

I... feel so uneducated. I have no idea who any artists are and wouldn't know them even if they came up to me and slapped me! So... I guess I'm just commenting to say that I have no idea! ahahaha..ha... >.>;;;

MIWA SHIROW.......... i love his art style so much, like. everything he does is so beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to my eye holes and i love that he draws both cute things and really creepy hardcore shit, from messy to super polished, bless those versatile hands. i could probably gush about miwa shirow's art all day lmao.

i also really like hoshino katsura's recent work (latest DGM chapters are a god send artwise + her instagram is beautiful, as opposed to the mess DGM was at the beginning) as well as ogure ito's current art style, and his was even worse when he first started. I'VE GOT A SOFT SPOT FOR ARTISTS THAT SHOW A LOT OF IMPROVEMENT OVER TIME???

ARINA TANEMURA for life. Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne was the first manga that I ever read and that was kind of my gateway into manga and anime. I loved Full Moon as well, but Shinshi Doumei Cross became one of my all-time favorites (...even if I am still a little salty about some things in the ending). Her art is absolutely gorgeous and has gotten so beautiful over the years. I really like all the detail that she puts into drawing long hair and cute outfits and giant sparkly shoujo eyes.

just for fun here is some fanart she drew of the sailor moon cast. I follow her on twitter and she posts a lot of cute stuff like this where she draws fanart of other popular series!

YUSUKE MURATA!!! GOODNESS GRACIOUS!!!! I adore his art sososoo much he's so amazing and ALWAYS improving with what feels like every line he draws??? Seeing the art evolve is half of what made Eyeshield 21 my favorite manga.
His character designs are SO VARIED from really silly to THAT'S THE COOLEST DUDE I'VE EVER SEEN AND HIS COMPOSITION?????? LIKE??????? His sense of movement and framing is so phenomenal I am always in awe.
He is always pushing and testing the limits of his medium and it is so great to see it's SO CUTE AND FULL OF PERSONALITY I'M OVERWHELMED
AND OMFG HIS COLORING glory glory hallelujah it is Gorgeous the water is so beautiful and the reflection of it and that water bottle are GOSH GOSGH SOGHO You can really really see how hard he works to always improve and never stagnate every chapter of OnePunch Man just leaves me like HOW!!!!!!!!

There's a super cute comic he did about deadlines that uses all sorts of cool techniques everyone should check out!! It is SUPER DUPER neat.

idk how/why i tl;dr...ed

[personal profile] yuugiri 2014-11-13 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
.... shiina takashi LMAO. i like that sorta old school look (~reminiscent to an arstyle you'd sometimes see in 80's & 90's anime, esp. in gs mikami and early zkc). idk i just think his artwork is cute and very pretty/aesthetically pleasing, AND HIS CHARACTERS ARE ALL STRANGELY REALLY ATTRACTIVE... i'd say his art during the late 2000's was The Best, since that was when it was the most detailed. also you can tell from his twitter that he really loves his characters and his work (and his cat), and i think that's nice. he seems like a cool lighthearted guy in general even tho his manga is HEARTBREAKING

my other fav mangaka is akamatsu ken tbh. not really because of his art tho -- i mean, it's well drawn and nice-looking, but the style itself is just Okay imo. BUT ANYWAY HIS STORIES... AFTER LOVE HINA.... negima and uq holder both have interesting, cool and well thought-out worldbuilding, neat concepts of magic & classes of mages and nonhuman species; and in uq ya got an exploration of different types of immortality and other monsters. a lot of his characters are really great too!! i feel like he doesn't get enough credit for this, though? like all 90% of the fandom seems to care about is who negi got with, and outside of the fandom he's known as that guy who made love hina. he even got backlash from his own fans when uq came out because "there is no moe or romcom" (an actual comment from an amazon user review). I FEEL SORRY FOR HIM LMFAO......

as for other mangaka whose artstyles i love!: takahashi rumiko, shimura takako, yoshikawa miki, ikeda riyoko, watashiya kaworu, togashi yoshihiro, tomizawa hitoshi. super into the art of aoyama gosho and asano inio even tho i haven't read any of their manga Yet.

I'm not that educated on artists either, but I can say that I really enjoyed Amano Akira's art in the TYL arc of Reborn. It started getting sorta weird toward the end and into the next arcs though. I don't much care for her evolved art style, either. But there for a while it was really gorgeous!

Segawa Masaki has gorgeous art too. I absolutely adored reading Basilisk because the art was just... guh. So gorgeous! I mean just look at Hotarubi, she's beautiful. Or Gennosuke and Kagerou.

Gosh, this is hard...
- Miwa Shirow (I really like the black & white aesthetic of DOGS)
- Ikumi Katagiri (Are You Alice? is consistently gorgeous, even when the art was rougher in the early parts. So much detail and again the start black/white that I love.)
- Kemuri Karakara (Donten ni Warau is gorgeous, especially the covers and color art.)
- Izumi Tsubaki (I love Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun!! And I think the art as much as the writing is what makes the manga so hilarious.)
- Aki (I love her art...so much...so soft and flowy and detailed... I love every Aki manga I've had a chance to read.)

Final shout-outs to Toboso Yana (Black Butler) and Utako Yukihiro (Makai Ouji) for art styles I also really enjoy!

In all honesty, I don't really have a favorite mangaka. At least...not when one considers mangaka for series that I have actually read. Out of what I've actually seen in series I know well, Amano Akira definitely comes to mind.

Overall, though, I'm of the belief that Tanemura Arina will always reign supreme.

I personally like Rando Ayamine's work, thought i have only read like 2-3 different series of his. But his drawings always have very detailed parts and nice looking faces (though, as most mangaka, they do have assistants to help with many things..)

I also like Kazuki Takahashi's current work. His old work is really nice, but he has really updated his style and attention to details, I love seeing things he post from time to time (of course, its mostly yu-gi-oh..)

miwa shirow and shigenori soejima come to mind rn... i really like the sort of style where you use just solid black for all the shadows/shading idk what it's called but it's really cool!! although for soejima i'm a bigger fan of his art that uses brushes and whatnot. i wish he used it more often instead of for just box art/cover art, but that's probably impossible haha.

uhhh as for an actual mangaka whose work i read... i really like sorata akizuki's stuff?? but this has more to do with the fact that her costume/clothing designs are GORGEOUS and that she makes use of gratuitous fantasy elements i love that kind of shit.

this is more video games now but i love hidari and mel kishida! their girls are always so cute, and i love their use of colors. and speaking of vidya reminds me of tales so i'll say straight up that daigo okumura is my favorite of the tales designers. i love how bright and clean his colors are! fujishima had a lot of good designs but he reaaaaaaally needs a break and i think it shows (sorey? did you mean the bastard design child of jude/colette/anise???). it's a shame too because i think belldandy is probably one of the most gorgeous characters ever designed, but he's never really made anything like that for tales. inomata is good too though, wonky proportions aside, she's done THE prettiest girls in tales imo. but in the end, i love okumura's work the most.

in the end this became an excuse to talk about tales.

I like redjuice, koyama, and humi's artwork. Maoyuu yuusha's light novel covers are so good man. Humi has such nice color useage and it's so soft sighs loudly

Redjuice's character designs are so appealing and lately i've grown fond of amano akira.

Right now, the only manga I've been following religiously is Fairy Tail and now all it's spinoff mangas as well. Because I'm obsessed. But for pretty pretty, go no further than the ladies of Clamp.

[personal profile] ex_naoto834 2014-11-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
HMMMMMM, I HAVE A FEW BUT I'M JUST GOING TO RESPOND WITH TWO.

the first mangaka that i love is ono natsume (aka basso). a lot of her art is pretty simplistic but there's just something about it that i find really pretty and beautiful. i already have quite a few of her works and will try to obtain more in the future probably....

examples: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
yes.....a million examples were necessary because sdijfsakf I LOVE HER.

the second is kazuya minekura. I THINK HER ART IS FANTASTIC. SPECIFICALLY HER SAIYUKI STUFF. i'm really super into saiyuki and have been for a long time. i don't really know how else to describe my love or what else to really say so I'M JUST GONNA PUT SOME EXAMPLES OF HER ART......

examples: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven.

ART WISE it is probably Hiromu Arakawa, since she is very very good at drawing battle scenes. Her art is crisp and clean too! Not to mention FMA is a badass series with badass characters so it's a win-win situation all around.

Next is probably Nobuhiro Watsuki, who was the first mangaka I really fell in love with back when I was suuuuper into Rurouni Kenshin.

HILARIOUSLY Gosho Aoyama does not make it onto this list even though DCMK is my favorite series ever. . . I really liked his early artwork because it was dynamic, unique and cute, but his recent stuff really makes me "eh."

I like Tsubaki Izumi, Hiramoto Akira, CLAMP, Shinohara Kenta, Murata Yuusuke and um... whoever does Shokugeki no Soma, I'm terrible. I'm drawn to manga mainly because of the art! If the art isn't that good and the story isn't very gripping, I'll most likely drop it.

I also like Buriki but I feel like I can't put him up there with the rest. oops. I love his coloring, though.

FINALLY I DON'T LIKE SORACHI'S ART BUT... GINTAMA IS SO GOOD THAT I CAN FORGIVE IT...

This is really hard. I think CLAMP is the first thing that comes to mind because they're what really got me into art and manga at all in the first place and their style really appeals to me. Aside from them I would say Shimura Takako, her work is really simple but lovely, Nakamura Asumiko, her's is really gorgeous and striking and really emotional I adore it, and Ito Junji, the contrast between the actual horror and the human characters is really nice and both are drawn so well.

This is hard there are so many...but when it comes to mangaka some of the ones I love are Clamp, Chica umino, Takeshi Obata and Hiromu Arakawa, Yusuke Murata!
Clamp's attention to detail in their art, Umino's ability to add hilarity to scenes and Obata's effort to make his characters look as fashionable as possible have always inspired me! And of course Arakawa's FMA is one of the series closest to my heart hehe...
I don't think anything has to be said about Yusuke Murata except that man's on another level...
GOODNESS I haven't read too much manga in a while though I need to fix that sometime (゜▽゜;)

There are actually quite a lot I like... but if I have to pick... then Yuu Watase... I fell in love with her drawing style many years back. I seen better artist but going back to my roots I pick her.
vilya: (Default)

[personal profile] vilya 2014-11-17 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't read as much manga as I used to, but I remember loving anything Yuu Watase touched! Particularly the Alice 19th series, which had a story that grabbed me and art that I adored on every page.

On a slightly different note, I also tend to fall for things done "miyazaki-style" regardless of the artist: beautiful backgrounds/animated nature and that specific art style of characters, regardless of whether it's still art or animated.

instead of talking about my favorite mangaka, i'll talk about when i met one :O!

i met maki murakami at otakon in like... 2007, i think? i was only 17 at the time and i had two things i could have had her sign: an actual volume of gravitation or one of the uh... dirtier doujinshi she had drawn (2007 was a year of shame for sure). when i handed her the actual manga volume to sign, through her interpreter she asked why i didn't want the doujinshi signed instead. i told her i'd love to have it signed instead, but that my dad might ask to see what i got signed and she thought that was Hilarious. i also loved her attitude towards everything at the Q&A. i got to ask her about the series and why it took such a weird change towards the middle. she was honest and said that she got bored and wanted to see what kind of crazy things she could put in and her editor would accept. i feel like if i was a mangaka i'd try to do the same things.

For mangaka, I probably have to go with Yuu Watase as well! Her art is just really beautiful, and while I'm not really into her works anymore, I still really enjoy looking at her art. I used to love Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no Ceres and Alice 19th though, and the art was partly because of that. orz
