I've been living in Japan for about three weeks now, I'll be spending a year here as part of my university course (It should be noted right now that despite being a Japanese studies student my Japanese is atrocious).
I kind of find it difficult adjusting to new places in general so to be somewhere so different and so far from home is totally daunting. I don't know if it's culture 'shock' as such but I do have this constant sense of being out of place. There were lots of little things I was surprised about, like most public bathrooms not having hand dryers or towels or the fact that it's still hot and humid despite being almost October. That being said, there are a lot of things I'm enjoying as well! I can't profess my love for vending machines enough and my friends took me out of karaoke last week and the selection of songs was astounding (they had so many Touhou arranges, I sang NO LIFE QUEEN, it was great!)
I hope I'll be able to fully settle down soon, and I need to keep reminding myself that I have the whole year here and things take time. Anything I don't understand I'll eventually learn and my language skills will improve if I actually get out there and practice.
