Discussion 21

Welcome to DISCUSSION! Covering for Katy this week.

Hi, everyone! Once a week, I'm going to give you a topic. All players need to do is give their opinions/stories/comments on said topic. There's nothing really formal about this, but you'll get cards for answering regardless. There's no requirement about how big or detailed of an answer you give, but try to avoid one word answers! (This is about talking, after all)

This week's topic is CG ANIME.
Because I'm hype for Knights of Sidonia S2 in Spring

A question you could answer (but are not limited/required to) is What do you think of CG in anime or anime that is completely animated in CG? (You could also talk about CG animation from any country!)

You'll get 2 regular cards and 1 puzzle card for commenting. Prizes will be distributed throughout the week and this game ends on Tuesday, January 20th.

Anime's that are completly CG? The only one I even know of was an older one called RUN=DIM, which I actually liked. As for anime's using CG, I honestly have no problem, and most of the times I have seen it used (Yugioh, Precure、sometimes Aikatsu) it has been good, decent, and even at times unnoticeable. However, it has to be done well, and I hate to bring this up, but I have seen some examples where it just is not done well at all, and does not help the animation in any way shape or form (sailor moon、again sometimes Aikatsu)

I guess it all depends on the type of CG being used, what its being used for, WHO is doing it, and what style is it trying to match. For Things like Aikatsu and Precure, its used a lot for the Dancing and long scenes, as it is for Transformations (at times), Yugioh uses it for some heavyer monster scenes, usually Dragons for some scenes.

I don't have any problem with it since it doesn't affect the plot. Though when it is poorly done it highly encourages me to continue to watch the anime. It just annoys me to watch it.

I'M ALSO HYPED FOR SIDONIA S2 HELL FUCKING YEAH

so really after watching s1 i've seen the light... cg is still kind of terrible for the actual characters and giving them actual expression and life, but the fight scenes were amazing in sidonia. traditional 2d animation wouldn't have been able to do it as well i think, not without a crazy budget which 13 episode animes don't usually get. basically, despite it being kinda weird, it's not hard to see why they decided to go full cg.

there's another anime i know that used full cg in the worst way possible. i didn't watch all of it, but kingdom was in full cg and unfortunately focused on scenes with the actual characters most of the time from what i could tell. seeing them move disturbed me, that's call i can say.

I don't really prefer it, as I feel like the characters seem flatter in their expressions, but for little tiny parts, like fight scenes and transformations, I guess I can see the appeal.

it really depends on the cg itself tbh.. a lot of people seem really bothered with it but as long as it doesn't make characters look like barbie dolls from one of those movies, then who cares!! so it's fine as long as it's not hard on the eyes basically it takes a lot to actually annoy me with that stuff

SHIROBAKO HAS A REALLY GOOD EPISODE ABOUT CG IN ANIME everyone should watch Shirobako...
I don't like toooo much cg because personal taste, and it never really ages well, especially with how rapidly the industry is improving on it. Like, the difference between Aikatsu! s1 and now is INCREDIBLE. But, I do appreciate that because it's cheaper, everyone can spend more time and $$$$$$$$$ on well-done 2D animation, and when 2D and 3D are blended together really well it's just gorgeous.

I think it depends on how well the CG is done. CG in the middle of an otherwise normally drawn anime can be jarring and take me out of the moment. But if it's well done and completely CG, like the latest Harlock Movie...then holy lord, sign me up.

I haven't really watched any CG anime, now that I think about it. At least not full CG anime. I've noticed it being used for backgrounds and sections of elaborate sequences but it normally blends in quite nicely. I think the new Kancolle anime used CG for the battle scenes and I think it looks pretty cool! I guess we'll have to see how it carries on with the series.

Oh, but that does remind me. There was a CG anime a while back called Freedom Project that had designs done by Katsuhiro Otomo and they worked really well in 3D. It might just be because Otomo's style is more on the semi-realistic side but it didn't have that awkward feel that some full CG anime has. I still haven't actually watched the series though.

I think CG in animation that blends in well with the rest of the animation/adds to the wow factor of certain scenes is great! (the first digimon movie, summer wars comes to mind) Overuse of it/ poor usage is just a big "no" though...like sometimes I'm flippin through channels and I see some of the newer seasons of beyblade on and I look at the CG and go "I'm not about this!!" lmfao. Overall I prefer 2D animation little bit more I'm starting to sound like an old lady over here

The amount of full-on CG anime I've seen is few and far between tbh...(thank goodness for discussions now I can scan it for recs)

I'm not very into it. I don't think I'd watch an anime that was completely CG just because it doesn't appeal to me, but that could probably change if it was good enough/I was really interested. I think CG is best used in anime when it's subtle and really well-integrated. It definitely can work well! ... it just doesn't most of the time, in my opinion.

If it's well done then I have no problems with it! Some CG can be so bad that amateur... I think if you're going to make a whole anime with just CG then you should make it the best you can!

I understand why it's used, especially in idol anime, but it always throws me off a bit? It's a bit odd. I especially notice it in Love Live!, IDOLM@STER, Aikatsu, etc... the movements are good but their faces are pretty, well, dead, and it's off-putting.

I haven't seen any anime that's 100% CG but when it's mixed in and done well it's great. When it's done.. not too well... it's just distracting but generally not terrible. I'm not a big fan in general, just in all of animation, but when it's good it's good. Because of improvements in technology I'm finding it so much easier to enjoy CG films and stuff!
