This classic series tackles some heavy subject matter. In 19th century France, two boys end up rooming together at their boarding school - one, a cynical, abused, and somewhat wild child raised and manipulated by his uncle; the other, an orphaned but kind and altruistic aristocrat. At first they don't get along, despite the latter's attempts to make friends, but eventually, the one boy's tortured past comes to light and the two of them are able to bond, eventually falling in love and escaping together in hopes of living a simple life and overcoming past trauma.
